Helping Kids be Successful in the Many “Jobs” of Childhood

WHAT TO EXPECT
Introduction to Occupational Therapy
Welcome to the CHILD SUCCESS CENTER®. We look forward to working with you and your child. Our goal for each child, regardless of age, is that he/she becomes a comfortable and independent learner. By working closely with parents and teachers we are able to implement the most effective and current treatment strategies and programs available. The following outlines our therapeutic approach.

Our process is as follows:

Intake & Assessment
The intake process includes a functional developmental (sensory-motor, visual perceptual, sensory processing) and learning skills assessment and /or record review, parent/client consultation, report and recommendations, and program set- up. The intake process is mandatory for entrance into any CHILD SUCCESS CENTER® program. Through assessment, we ensure the best and most efficient programs and strategies are provided from day one, tailored for each individual child. (If you have a recent evaluation and wish to use it, contact the CHILD SUCCESS CENTER® for further details.)

This intake process includes testing time (2 hours), and a written report with a treatment plan. A parent consultation is also available for families wishing to review the results with the assessing therapist.

Occupational Therapy
“Occupations” entail everything that one does throughout his/her day that is purposeful and meaningful. A child’s most important occupations are playing, socializing, and learning. As an Occupational Therapist (OT), our goals are to help children become as comfortable, independent, and proficient in these areas of their lives.

If children are experiencing delays in the foundational skills required for these occupations, therapy will not only help to improve these skills, but will increase comfort and self-esteem. All intervention is one- to-one and individualized to each child’s specific needs.

Following the assessment and record review, a program will be recommended. For many children the program will be designed in 2 phases.

Phase I will primarily focus on foundational processing skills (gross and fine motor, planning and coordination, attention, sequencing and organization skills, visual and auditory processing, sensory processing and integration of the sensory motor systems). This prepares the brain for listening, looking and learning, and helps the child go on to be a more efficient learner.

Some children will continue into
Phase II, which will generally include pre academic skill development (such as letter and number identification and writing, sound symbol matching, pre-reading, and letter and number formation for handwriting). Many children who struggle with sensory motor processing require additional support with learning to read, comprehend, spell and participate in math. It is not uncommon for an educational therapist to continue the learning support near the age of 6.
